A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away . . .
Today is Star Wars day! Time to reflect on the saga that has defined a generation. Geeks everywhere rejoice the victory of the Rebel Alliance over the evil Galactic Empire. What is there about this story that has made it so appealing for so long? For a film that was so innovative from a cinematic perspective, its tale is timeless.
Star Wars chronicles the endless struggle between good and evil each trying to manipulate a supernatural force for control of the universe. An unlikely savior, Luke, rises from humble beginnings to face an overwhelming evil, Darth Vader and the Emperor, while the redemption of the galaxy hangs in the balance. Sound familiar? What about that one story with the ring? You know where an unlikely savior, Frodo, rises from humble beginnings to face an overwhelming evil, Sauron, while the redemption of Middle-Earth hangs in the balance. Here's another: an unlikely savior, Dr. Indiana Jones, rises from humble beginnings to face an overwhelming evil, Nazis, while the redemption of the great historical artifacts hang in the balance.
I could go on, but as we marvel about the commonality of every epic adventure we know, let's ponder something: Why do all of these stories follow the same pattern? Is there a formula, like in Algebra, that great storytellers pass throughout history? How could other similar stories, from ancient myth, follow this same pattern?
I have a theory. Are you ready? Okay, but this is gonna blow your mind. What if, just maybe, this story is subconsciously burned into our mind? This battle between good and evil. This longing for a savior. What if it's in our DNA? Sound like something out of Star Wars?
May the 4th be with you!
